Patek Philippe Geneve
Original painting size: 78 x 115 cm
The Patek Philippe Sky Moon Tourbillon features a distinctive double-faced design, housing twelve complications, and is renowned for its intricate hand-engraved case and artisanal enamel dials.
Case Design and Craftsmanship
The Sky Moon Tourbillon case is a masterpiece of hand-engraving, requiring over 100 hours of work by master artisans.
- Material and Dimensions: The watch is available in various precious metals, including platinum and 18k white or rose gold, with a substantial diameter of 42.8 mm (Ref. 5002) or 44 mm (Ref. 6002).
- Engraving: The case, lugs, crowns, minute-repeater slide, and even the fold-over clasp are entirely hand-engraved with intricate volutes and arabesque patterns, often incorporating the Patek Philippe Calatrava cross motif.
- Functionality in Design: The two crowns are not only engraved but also functional; the one at 4 o’clock (on the front side) has an arrow to indicate the winding direction, while the one at 2 o’clock (on the back side) has moon and star engravings to indicate its purpose for setting the astronomical functions.
Front Dial
The front dial focuses on traditional timekeeping and a perpetual calendar, combining complex mechanics with artistic enameling.
- Aesthetics: The dial on the Ref. 6002 features a combination of Grand Feu champlevé and cloisonné enamel, creating a rich, deep appearance in colors like brown or blue. The hour markers are applied gold Roman numerals.
- Complications: It displays the mean solar time (hours and minutes), a perpetual calendar with a retrograde date hand, and aperture displays for the day, month, and leap year cycle. A moon phase or age of the moon display is typically located at the 6 o’clock position.
Reverse Dial
The reverse dial presents a unique, poetic depiction of the night sky, showcasing Patek Philippe’s astronomical mastery.
- Aesthetics: The back features a detailed sky chart of the Northern Hemisphere, which includes the Milky Way and the moon.
- Complications: The displays include sidereal time (hours and minutes), the phases and orbit of the moon, and the time of meridian passage of Sirius and the Moon. A rotating elliptical outline on the sapphire crystal defines the portion of the sky visible from a given location.
